Weight plates

Equipment type:

Training type:

Plates are disc weights that are slid onto the outer portions of equipment such as barbells and dumbbells to increase their overall weight. These plates are then secured to the equipment using collars to ensure that they do not slide off the apparatus.

While most plates are made of cast iron, competition plates are made of a combination of rubber and iron and known as bumper plates as they need to withstand being dropped on a regular basis. Cheaper plates made entirely out of rubber are also available.

Weight plates are customarily colour-coded to designate their weight as per the guidelines set by the IWF. The following table catalogues the colour codes specified for Olympic weightlifting.

Red 25
Blue 20
Yellow 15
Green 10
